Ramblings: Sabotage -v- Politicking
I think that just about sums up Cameron's position on the EU but perhaps 'sabotage' isn't the word, perhaps it's been the art of politicking from the outset.
politic adj 1 said of a course of action: prudent; wise; shrewd. 2 said of a person: cunning; crafty. 3 old use political. See also body politic. verb (also politick) (politicked, politicking) intrans, derog to indulge in politics, especially to strike political bargains or to gain votes for oneself.
After looking at all the evidence M'Lud I submit that Mr 'same destination; different path' Cameron has always wanted Britain to be in the EU. Ted Heath begged our way into it (I wish he were alive today. Still, come the revolution we can always dig him up and hang his bones on a gibbet in Parliament Square), Thatcher discovered what it was all about and stood her ground as best she could, John 'Maastricht' Major didn't.
The Trades Unions wanted to join the EU because they saw the EU as giving them more power - they imagined an EU-wide strike of, eg, postal workers. I bet they'll be amongst the first on the bonfire of vanities.
The Labour Party, composed as it is of Fabians, ex-Marxists, ex-Trots, and advocates of Common Purpose & Agenda21, have always been sneaky International Socialist backdoor-dogs. Some are useful idiots and the majority, Miliband, Brown, Balls, Straw et al, will find they are expendable.
Back to Cameron: In less than twelve months we have gone from this, which was a holding position, to this, when his prevarications were noted by the msm, and this, which we knew would be the outcome. In fairness, he has always said, "If the Lisbon Treaty has not been ratified by all 27 countries by the time there is a Conservative government, we will hold a referendum." When pushed, the line has always been, "We will not let matters rest there."
There was never any way on God's earth that the Lisbon Treaty would not be fully ratified by all twenty-seven countries if/when the Conservatives formed a government next May and Cameron knew it, even as he wrote to Vaclav Klaus asking him to delay the Czech signing (nice try, Dave).
We can expect sudden and major changes in our Constitution to become self-evident - things done behind closed doors will come out into the open and why not? After all, in the words of EU Leaders, this Treaty is the final treaty and the EU won't need another: it is self-amending. Cameron's promise to put further treaties to the British people is hollow and he knows it. He must know it because even I know it. I think I'm right in saying that after Lisbon there's only one way to go back and that's to repeal the the 1972 European Communities Act.
That's the Party I'll vote for - the one that gives the British people a voice because I'm heartily sick of this damned stuff - look below at the Post of the Week from CharonQC or if you're feeling more poetic and can stand being kicked in the solar plexus, read Philip Pullman's powerful statement on the state of our country.

Imagine a country where the right to speak freely is restricted and individuals can be threatened by lawyers who can simply telephone a judge in Chambers to restrict them from speaking out, on what may well be a matter of great public importance, to protect sectional and very private corporate interests, where attempts to restrict the reporting of the proceedings of the press are routinely granted through the use of super-injunctions and, latterly, a country with laws which allowed lawyers to attempt to restrict the reporting of proceedings in parliament itself.
Imagine a country that leads the world in CCTV surveillance with more cameras per head of population than any other on Earth.
Imagine a country where not only the police but local authorities and other civilian bodies can routinely spy on you, intercept your email, bug your phone and can intrude to examine your bank accounts and then, even for quite minor offences, can seize your assets, freeze your bank account and seize and crush your car; powers intended to tackle terror and organised crime but which now will, inevitably, be used for far less serious offences.
Imagine a country which has restricted the money paid to experienced criminal lawyers with the result that many lawyers can no longer afford to practice in the field and the quality of representation may decline as a result.
Imagine a country with over 85,000 people in jail, a country where the Justice Ministry wants yet more prisons and even considered hiring prison ships from elsewhere.
Imagine a country where the government uses the device of statutory instrument to slide controversial legislation through into law without the eyes of the public, expert commentators or members of parliament being able to see, or objective minds, to consider those laws.
Imagine a country that allows the prime minister to wage war without the consent of the elected representatives of the people…
You don’t need to imagine such a country. You are living in it.

We taxpayers are an amiable lot aren't we? In fact, it could we said that we're generous to a fault.
This smiling, silk-tied piece of work is Professor David Eastwood. He is now Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham University but when he was the former CE of the Higher Education Funding Council we paid, amongst other things, his £900+ pa membership of the ultra-grand Athenaeum Club in Pall Mall. It's so exclusive that you and I probably wouldn't qualify for shoe-shine boy.
And there's more! Twenty-four of Britain's biggest quangos have taken almost £1million exes in the last three years including tens of thousands of pounds on taxis, flights and hotels & thousands more on alcohol.
As the Taxpayers' Alliance reported last week Britain has 1,152 quangos costing £90billion a year. The twenty-four quangos surveyed represent just 2% of the total.

In the last two weeks there has been overwhelming support from the Muslim community, in relation to the March4Shariah campaign; furthermore, articles displayed on the Islam4UK website illustrating examples of what could happen to iconic landmarks under the Shariah in Britain, proved extremely popular and moreover created a great deal of awareness about the Islamic Shari’ah.
Unfortunately, in the run up to the planned event, it had also become apparent that certain right-wing/anti-Islamic organisations had become intent on preventing the march from going ahead, using threats of physical violence, including bomb and death threats to any member of the Muslim community who happened to attend the march...

Lord Pearson is a contender for the leadership of UKIP following Nigel Farage's resignation. If Pearson is elected, it could be a huge boost for UKIP as he steers public perception away from a one-policy Party. As I've mentioned before, I'm now doubtful about the Conservatives following their pathetic, weak- kneed response to the EU which compounded their 12yrs of poor opposition. Lord Pearson might just swing it for me so expect more videos and news of him on the blog as I try to keep an eye on him.

"I and other ministers had absolutely no knowledge about this exercise. I make no complaint about that but now that it has gone public I make clear what I would have told officials privately: That these proposals are simply unacceptable. The exercise has therefore ended. Democracy has to be paid for."Maybe so Jack, but we'll be watching. Does no-one in this amoral government know what the heck's going on anymore?

The Ministry of Justice has drawn up a Working Paper for the Treasury which suggests how to make savings of about £65m 'efficiency savings' in the cost of the next General Election. Some of the measures require legislation but others, such as opening fewer polling stations, cutting staff, or reducing security, do not and can be done quite arbitrarily.
Costs have apparently risen enormously in line with checking postal votes so it seems pretty obvious that withdrawing postal voting should be the first simple step to cut cost and also restore some integrity to the democratic process. But no, that's too easy for them so they'll retain that system which is open to abuse and add a few more ideas to the mix which make corruption even more likely.
At the same time as local councils are considering ending the practice of overnight counting and leaving ballot boxes hanging around they're actually thinking of reducing security. Regarding overnight voting Jack Straw has said: I must not improperly seek to interfere with the necessary discretion of returning officers or the capacity of the Electoral Commission to give advice as they think appropriate. It would be inappropriate for the Government to use its control of the purse strings to influence the judgment of the returning officers."

That 'Grovelling' Apology
Thank you very much Mr Speaker. With permission I would like to make a personal statement.Final section on video (1:48) here.
I should like to thank the Commissioner for Parliamentary Standards and the Committee on Standards & Privileges for the Report & Memorandum published this morning. I should like especially to thank the Commissioner for his diligence and courtesy throughout this investigation.
I am grateful the Commissioner recognises that I was within the rules of this House in establishing a claim in parliamentary allowances for my constituency home. I welcome his acceptance that my claims were necessarily incurred and that I consistently claimed below the maximum allowed. I accept fully that I made careless mistakes on both mortgage interest and council tax claims for which I apologise unreservedly to this House but I identified these areas and repaid them in full in April/May 2009.
I further accept the admonition from the Commissioner about the informal nature of my arrangements. I regret that I did not recognise that more formal arrangements would have been wise and preferable so as to avoid the risk of an appearance of benefit and I apologise for this.
The Commissioner has accepted that my claims had the effect of abating all costs except mortgage interest and council tax and were therefore in line with advice given to me by the Department of Resources and repeated to him as recently as 3 months ago... ...
Not much grovelling going on there and it certainly wasn't "abject" as reported by The Times. These apologies are developing a theme - first the self-justification and then the apology for being caught out. There's probably a diy template whizzing around MPs at the moment which comprises a basic apology structure complete with suggested phrases and a list of appropriate words for MPs to choose from.

Today, 1pm, Mitcham Road, Croydon
*2nd Battalion The Rifles Homecoming Parade*
They will mark their return from a six-month tour of duty where they sustained heavy casualties, by parading through the town before a civic reception is held in their honour.
The battalion was deployed to Afghanistan in April and its soldiers have been engaged in close quarters combat with the Taliban in Helmand Valley, where they have seen some of the fiercest fighting.
As a battalion, 2 Rifles have lost 13 of their men on operations. As a battle group, which includes supporting arms and services, the 2 Rifles Battle Group has lost 23 soldiers.
The Battle Group as a whole also had a high injury rate with severe injuries and loss of limbs, sight and other lasting damage - all of which will require life-long support and aftercare from regimental and other benevolence funds.
The Band and Bugles of The Rifles will hold a short concert in North End before the parade commences.
At 1pm soldiers from the battalion will march from the TA barracks in Mitcham Road, through the North End shopping area to the town hall in Katharine Street.
Once there they will be inspected by the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Margaret Mead.
The soldiers will then march to nearby Fairfield Halls in Park Lane for a reception hosted by the Mayor.

The Rifles Battalion, of which 2 Rifles is part, was formed in 2007 by the amalgamation of the four Light Infantry and Rifle Regiments of the Light Division: The Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry; The Light Infantry; The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry and The Royal Green Jackets.

PMQs: Verdict + Videos
Clegg went on Copenhagen & climate change and Brown repeated a line he's used before: "M-m-m-m-Mister Speaker, I feel he wrote his second question before he'd heard my answer to his first." Well, duh! He must have been reading his Bedtime Book of Stock Phrases to Whip Out on Any Occasion again.
There was lots of shouting from both sides, as you can hear in the brief clip below. Towards the end Clive Efford a Labour MP made a huge gaffe which was roundly booed by the Conservatives; he called Brown 'our Head of State'. Efford knew exactly what he was saying, it wasn't a slip of the tongue. The highlight of the exchange, for me, was Cameron mouthing "Oh, do get off," when Brown was responding to a planted question from Chris Ruane, a Labour back-bencher, about the Conservatives withdrawing from the EPP in the EP to join with "extremists".
David Evennett (Con, Bexleyheath & Crayford): "Can the PM tell me, why do we need a President of the EU and who is he supporting for the job?"
Brown: "We've made it very clear that if this position is to be created, and the European treaty is not yet through, [scattered howls of disbelief from the benches] and if, and if, and if, if, er, if the former Prime Minister Tony Blair comes forward as a candidate we will be very happy to support him."

Direct EU Taxation
I don't normally get around to reading the Daily Express but the other papers this morning all seem so predictable and are going over old ground. The Express claims to have seen documents revealing proposals for Britons to pay taxes direct to the EU.
We already pay taxes to the EU via our own government; these plans merely cut out the Westminster middle-men.
Mats Persson, of think-tank Open Europe, warned the plans would “rightly cause concern among British taxpayers”.
Jim McConalogue of the European Foundation, which wants to renegotiate European treaties, said: “It is clear from its so-called ‘reform’ agenda that Brussels is committed to the daylight robbery of the British taxpayer.”
Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, branded the idea of direct taxation from Brussels an “outrage”. He added: “Control of taxation must rest solely in the hands of democratically elected politicians who answer to British taxpayers. The EU has shown time and time again it is greedy for power. This is another sign they will never stop trying to grab it.”
Ruth Lea of Eurosceptic think-tank Global Vision said: “People need to wake up to the fact we are now in a superstate. Year by year we are living in an integrated United States of Europe and this is just part of it.”

Pleased Is Not The Same As Happy
It's been a sad day. I've read about a homosexual policeman being beaten by a gang to within an inch of his life, a pensioner axed to death by a total stranger, a lone woman attacked, kicked and stabbed by two passing men, a gang of teenagers setting fire to a man's beard whilst he slept on a train, the list goes on and on, day by day. If the answer to all this was as simple as voting in a new government who could wave a magic wand then my mood might lift a little, but it isn't. Anyone who thinks our rules and laws aren't being directed by the EU is an idiot and Cameron has little room for manoeuvre on this - he supports it yet challenges it and wants to be at the heart of it; he wants to be at the heart of it but challenges it. ?
I'm pleased that Open Europe's article was given wider coverage in the online Daily Mail this morning but the fact remains that the structure of the EU cannot survive; to do that it must depend on control and surveillance. As a rule, people don't like that.
The EU was built on a false premise, on shifting sands, and is therefore a political house of cards that, ultimately, will fail. This fact still doesn't please me or make me happy. The fact that the Lisbon Treaty has not yet been fully ratified also means that it still remains largely hidden from open scrutiny so the majority of people still don't realise what's behind it, why it does what it does or who benefits. Believe me, it hasn't been created just to make it easier for us to travel or work in Europe and it doesn't cajole us to join the euro just to make it easier for us on holiday and put Cambios out of business. Many of the structures provided for in Lisbon but not yet in effect have already been put in place behind the scenes so that they can be implemented as quickly as possible. This is how sure they are of themselves; this is hubris. I hope it's their downfall.
In their political equations they've ignored the fortitude of people: they seem to think we can be ignored and that they won't face opposition:

Warsaw, 1944
Hungary, 1956
China, 1989
Iran, 2003

We've had weeks of increasing hysteria following the announcement by the BBC to have Nick Griffin on Question Time; we've had pages of vilification for Griffin & the BNP; we had the 'leak', from one of Blair's former advisers, that immigration was uncontrolled for political reasons; we've had endless speculation about Blair & Miliband playing a role in the EC; the news that an organisation prohibited in more than 20 countries for its extremism is being government-funded over here.
We're being bombarded from all sides and the latest salvo is this on disguising (redacting?) the link between immigration and crime: B*gger Blair.
And what about Roche urging governments to stockpile tamiflu before a pandemic? I bet that helped their profits. And don't forget the forewarned Summer of Rage that the police expected to hit the country; I'm getting the distinct impression that they're disappointed (though they did their best with the G20 and are still practising at Climate Camps).
It's just been too busy with this sort of news lately. Have I really become so cynical that I see these headlines as a distraction away from something even worse? What the heck is coming our way that could possibly be worse than what we already have? Armageddon? The 4 Horsemen?
All I'm saying is that it just doesn't smell right. Our MPs have been brought into disrepute; Parliament is in constitutional chaos; crime is rife; the police have been politicised; the economy is double-dipping; England's laws are being overturned in favour of the European system; the Queen seems to be sitting this one out and the EU looms as our saviour.
I suggest we keep the tin foil handy and don't fire until we see the whites of their eyes.
And that won't be until after the Lisbon Treaty is ratified and they feel more secure. There is no opt-out from the EU save through negotiation and financial penalty (which we don't have to pay - what could they do?). Once again, b*gger that for a game of soldiers.

Yet another EU Directive:
[The Equal Treatment Directive] is common hate crime legislation, which will turn disapproval for Islamic practices or homosexual lifestyles into crimes. Msm Still Not Running With It
Pressure is said to be growing for an independent inquiry, though by whom isn't made clear. I see from the article that Andrew Neather is the Evening Standard's very own Comments Editor which could explain why the Standard's Andrew Gilligan broke the story.
The second news story broke yesterday in the Sunday Telegraph and concerns the extremist Islamic organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir being given public money to fund their own schools in England. All this is despite the fact that Tony Blair said his government would ban the radical group and Bangladesh & about 20 other countries have already done so.
By the way, on the same BBC Radio4 programme where Straw said the English were "potentially very aggressive, very violent," William Hague, then Leader of the Opposition, was reported as saying: "English nationalism is the most dangerous of all forms of nationalism that can arise within the United Kingdom, because England is five-sixths of the population of the UK."
No apology for re-posting these two stories - I don't think we should let the issues be ignored since they're obviously connected and are pieces of a jigsaw.
Why Now?
What's the media fuss this morning about police spotter cards? It's not as if we didn't know. Some of them also unlawfully detain & arrest and cite 'laws' which don't exist in order to delete photographs or mobile phone footage.

Any officer making an arrest for an offence under Section 58a must be able to demonstrate a reasonable suspicion that the information was of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.
It should ordinarily be considered inappropriate to use Section 58a to arrest people photographing police officers in the course of normal policing activities, including protests, as without more, there is no link to terrorism."

After the media blitz on the BNP/QT over the past few weeks, Labour Ministers warning of 'rivers of blood' and the silence of the Conservatives, I'm determined to vote for an Independent or one of the 'minority' parties, come what may. If that means Labour or Conservatives are elected again then I foresee a backlash of the likes not seen since the 17th century.
What Cameron has said: "...a progressive reform agenda demands that we redistribute power from the EU to Britain, and from judges to the people. We will therefore hold a referendum on the Lisbon treaty; pass a law requiring a referendum to approve any further transfers of power to the EU; negotiate the return of powers, and require far more detailed scrutiny in parliament of EU legislation, regulation and spending. And we will introduce a British bill of rights to strengthen our liberties, spell out the extent and limit of rights more clearly, and ensure proper democratic accountability over the creation of any new rights."
So far so good but there should be no 'limit of rights' defined by the State. Cameron needs to revise his History. Here's a warning to Britain from Angela Merkel.

The only avenue open to us is to have a referendum on how closely tied to the EU the British want to be. If we vote for looser ties we can expect the EU to be vindictive & spiteful, announcing colossal fines and penalties galore. If Cameron really wants to be the PM of the people of this country, he will turn to the EU and tell them that we've paid them enough over the years with little return but much grief in terms of petty regulations. The English will not be 'harmonised' with Europe; the EU slogan of 'Unity through Diversity' is a cr@p slogan.
Cameron's Big Tent = more of the same. Btw, where's the voice of our Monarch in all of this Constitutional reform?

The claim:The "non-white member of the audience" (of whom there were many and who represented a true Britain, according to Tessa Jowell on LBC Radio) was the one who called him 'Dick'. Why is it 'contentious' when the govt already does this? Perhaps the only problem is that the policy is hushed up? Or perhaps the problem is the immigrants keep coming back for more of the same and more compensation because UK Border Agency is rubbish - as it was intended to be. It's The Magic Roundabout writ large. No name, no pack-drill; no accountability and media compliance.

I'm sick of reading the papers, listening to the radio, hearing the news and trying to discern truth from fiction. From now on we'd all be better off assuming that everything is a distortion of the truth until proved otherwise. So, having switched off from the media hype about Nick Griffin which, despite the best efforts of our not-so-esteemed 4th Estate, is going down like a lead balloon with online commenters as people struggle to find their voice at last, I thought I'd do some in-house tidying because the blog's getting too unwieldy. Adding the links-within feature has meant that more people read more posts instead of just the one linked to but it comes at the price of being slower to load.
I tend to put links to blogs I like and read in the sidebar regardless of whether they link here or not - it seems fair policy to me and gives others the chance to read something they might not otherwise have caught. Unfortunately, there's still an awful lot of blogs I read that I don't link to for reasons of space/loading time plus I don't like the Blogger choices for display (like the American/Canadian/Aussie/NZ list which only gives a choice between alphabetical or not). In case I go missing while I'm messing about I've backed up the blog again - something I'd recommend everyone to do every day now in any event.

I tend to put links to blogs I like and read in the sidebar regardless of whether they link here or not - it seems fair policy to me and gives others the chance to read something they might not otherwise have caught. Unfortunately, there's still an awful lot of blogs I read that I don't link to for reasons of space/loading time plus I don't like the Blogger choices for display (like the American/Canadian/Aussie/NZ list which only gives a choice between alphabetical or not). In case I go missing while I'm messing about I've backed up the blog again - something I'd recommend everyone to do every day now in any event.

The PPU supported appeasement and backed Neville Chamberlain's policy at Munich in 1938, regarding Hitler's claims on the Sudetenland as legitimate. This article demonstrates the EU's role in Rockefeller's Trilateral Commission´s task: To build a coherent belt across the Earth under New World Order control. Starting with the EU extension takes place to the west (the North American Union with the United States, Mexico and Canada is under construction). Eastward, the EU has expanded through the Mediterranean Union, which includes all countries along the Mediterranean Sea - except Libya. Now Italy's foreign minister, former EU Commissioner, Franco Frattini, states that the Union for the Mediterranean is to be expanded to the Persian Gulf. This means that the EU promise at the 6th Euro-Mediterranean Foreign Minister Conference on the EU's 4 freedoms, including freedom of movement and investment, will include the fanatic Saudi Wahhabi Muslims, backed by the royal house, who are in full swing to build mosques in Europe. Unfortunately, other EU actions suggest that this is EU policy. Farther east, the ASEAN bloc has been established, the EU holds regular ASEM meetings on world affairs with Chinese and other Southeast Asians. Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is trying to build an Asian union with Trilateral Commissionists, Japan and China i.a. The illuminists have occupied Afghanistan - and so far, the only delusional, unwilling part of the chain is: Iran. And that does not bode well for peace in the Middle East.
State Opening Of Parliament
After coming back from the recess on the 16th October following the longest summer break ever (82days), the formal State Opening of Parliament will be on the 18th November.
Harriet Harman has just announced the earliest Christmas recess ever of three weeks from 16th December to 5th January 2010. At 128 days, the current Parliamentary session is the shortest for 30 years.
And we pay them how much?

"1. This has been a bad Government
The main purpose of change has been to seal off the past. That past has been delegitimized in order to strip rights and liberties of the associations that used to protect them. Not surprisingly, we find ourselves in a country with a Potemkin democracy, where speech and publication are censored, where the police are feared, where we are continuously spied on as we go about our business, where we can be imprisoned without trial or charge for a month, and generally where we find ourselves having to deal every day with administrative bodies given powers that others who have not yet had felt them still cannot believe possible. On any normal assumptions, the country has been governed very badly since 1997. On the assumptions of the Government, things have gone very well indeed.
2. This country is ruled by people who have been corrupted by bad ideas.
They tell us they want a more “inclusive” and “diverse” society. They have certainly welcomed the mass immigration that they enabled the moment they came into office. It has been useful for impoverishing the working classes – in their attitudes and behaviour once perhaps the most conservative people in the country. It has also provided much evidence for their claim that the old England into which we were born has passed away, and that we need a new constitutional settlement – a settlement much in need of censorship and endless meddling in private choices. Even so, they make sure to live in white enclaves and to send their children to private schools where class photographs look much as they did in 1960.
They tell us they want to save the planet from “climate change”. If they have made Phillips and Siemens rich from their light bulb ban, they still fly everywhere and drive everywhere, and light up their own houses and offices like Christmas trees.
These are bad people. They must be regarded as such in everything they do.
The Law:
There was a time when it was enough for us to be told that someone had broken the law for us to think ill of that person. But times are altered. When the laws themselves are corrupt, they lose moral force. It is no longer enough for us to be told that someone is a law breaker.
The Monarchy:
When she came to the throne, Elizabeth had what seems to have been almost the universal regard of the people. She has spent the past 57 years betraying the people. Whatever the constitutional lawyers may claim, there is a contract between Monarch and people. We pretend to treat whoever wears the Crown as the Lord’s Anointed. The wearer of the Crown agrees in turn to act as a defence of last resort against tyrannical politicians. That is the truth behind the phrases of the coronation oath. The Queen could, without bringing on a crisis, have blocked the law in the early 1960s that removed juries from most civil trials. She could have blocked the subsequent changes that abolished the unanimity rule and the right of peremptory challenge. She should have risked a crisis, and refused her assent to the European Communities Bill, or demanded a fair referendum first. She could have harried the politicians of the past two generations, reminding them of the forms and substance of the Ancient Constitution. She had the moral and legal authority to do this. Had she spoken to us like adults, she would have had popular support. She did nothing ... she had every legal right to demand a referendum over the Lisbon Treaty. This had been promised by every party at the 2005 general election. When the promise was withdrawn, she would have had public opinion and much of the media behind her in refusing to give assent to the Treaty’s Enabling Act. Again, she did nothing..."
